I

I am an abstract painter currently based in Brighton, inspired by the beauty of the South Downs. My paintings are an emotional response to a moment in my surroundings. A spark of initial excitement at what I can see whether it’s the drama of a huge vista, or the way a tiny fleck of light drops on to a branch. Through painting this memory of the moment, I try to interweave reality with emotion.

My process often begins on a run or a walk. I like to explore, to see new places, to lose myself amongst landscapes or townscapes. When I am brought to a halt by some visual excitement in front of me, I take some photos and then return later with my sketchbooks, amassing information en plein air.  I will then paint from memory, direct on to a canvas. The desire to respond to the memory is gradually eroded and the work starts to tell its own story in layers of mark making and paint. The layers all hold time and memories.

I currently paint using predominantly acrylics for speed. I move around the canvas as I paint, turning it to paint from all directions, often dancing as I paint. The process is very physical, and is similar to trying to capture a fleeting dream on awakening.
